Aerophagia: treatments

There is no cure for aerophagia (ie to cure this condition). Available treatments are either preventive or symptomatic.

In case of aerophagia due to eating disorders cognitive-behavioral therapies could help improve this disorder.

Good habits to adopt

In case of aerophagia, in the more common sense of the term, a healthy lifestyle can already reduce abdominal symptoms. Must therefore :

  • eat slowly, at the table,
  • chew foods to reduce air absorption.

Foods to avoid and favor

It should also try to avoid foods known to promote the absorption of air and those responsible for abdominal distention by fermentation. It is necessary :

  • avoid soft drinks
  • prefer flat water.

FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols) are foods known to promote intestinal distension.

The FODMAPs:
F = Fermentable (rapidly fermented by colon bacteria)
O = Oligo-saccharides (foods rich in fructans, fructo-oligosaccharides and galactans)
D = Di-saccharides (lactose)
M = Monosaccharides (excess glucose fructose)
A = And (And)
P = Polyols (sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and maltitol)
FODMAPs are found in certain foods including wheat, certain fruits and vegetables and certain milk-based products.

A diet low in FODMAPs can help improve the feeling of bloating.
The following foods should therefore be favored:

  • Vegetables: bamboo shoots, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, squash, tomatoes.
  • Fruits: bananas, grapes, grapefruit, kiwi, lemons, oranges.
  • Protein: beef, chicken, eggs, fish, lamb.
  • Dairy products: cheeses (but not fresh cheese!).

Treatments

If symptoms persist despite a proper diet and lifestyle, some treatments also reduce symptoms.

It is activated charcoal which allows a reduction of flatulence as well as bloating by absorption of the intra-digestive air.

There are also some treatments containing simeticone : it is a substance that acts by modifying the surface tension of the gas bubbles thus causing their coalescence. It is often used in combination with other symptomatic treatments (anthrax, antispasmodic ...).

Other so-called "symptomatic" treatments are available.

If symptoms persist despite a suitable diet, it is recommended to consult your doctor.
