The main causes of aerophagia are either related to chewing and swallowing, or related to the type of food consumed.
- Quick chewing and swallowing promotes air absorption during the meal.
- Stress or anxiety can also increase aerophagia.
- Hyper salivation and its causes promote flatulence.
Some foods are also involved in the occurrence of aerophagia:
- Chewing gum chewing is responsible for the digestive absorption of air.
- Aerophagia is aggravated by the consumption of soft drinks, such as soda or sparkling water.
It is therefore to avoid foods that are:
- Source of fructans: wheat, rye, barley, onions, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, artichokes, asparagus, beetroot, chicory, leeks, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, fennel.
- Sources of galactans : pulses and beans
- Sources of fructose, lactose or polyols .
° Fructans: soluble fibers that are neither digested nor assimilated.
° Galactans: a carbohydrate intermediate between sugar and starch, naturally present in legumes and used in the food industry as an additive to thicken or stabilize food.
