Snoring: Sleep Apnea

Apnea means "stop breathing". When the airways are completely obstructed, the air does not pass at all, and breathing stops for 5 to 10 seconds.

We speak of apnea when this duration of blocking of the breathing is at least equal to 10 seconds. If these apneas are not frequent, there is no need to worry.

However, beyond 5 or 6 apneas per hour, we evoke a pathological problem known as sleep apnea syndrome.
The unlocking is done through a reflex mechanism. In the absence of oxygen reaching the brain, this one by a complex system of stimulation, causes what is called "micro-awakening" allowing a contraction of the muscles and the passage of the air to breathe again.

How to differentiate snoring from sleep apnea?

When snoring becomes daily, frequent throughout the sleep and interspersed with respiratory pauses that last a few seconds, several times a night, you must seriously consult a doctor. This one will be able to confirm you or not the apnea of sleep by recording your sleep.

This requires a special examination in hospital structure, for a whole night and is called polysomnography. You will have to sleep in a room where a light infra-red allows the technician to monitor you. You will be connected to electrodes on the ends of your fingers, on parts of your body, on the skull.

All your movements will be recorded for later analysis and to determine the different parameters to see if you are doing real breathing pauses.

The results

Sleep apnea is considered a pathology because its consequences are important in terms of general health. On the one hand partial awakenings to re-oxygenate the body and especially the brain, are not necessarily aware. That is, people do not realize that there has been an awakening. But if it goes unnoticed ... our organ, it suffers, and the tomorrows are painful!

Sleep is not good, it is on the surface, hence this lack of rest. Headaches and / or migraines are then invited more and more frequently in the person who snores by apnea. The fatigue and the desire to sleep, due to the micro-alarms, are more and more common with the risk of falling asleep really in extreme cases and to cause serious accidents.

In addition, people with sleep apnea, more often have an increase in blood pressure, as well as the complication of heart disease.
