Presbycusis: the symptoms

Presbycusis begins at age 30, but it is usually after age 50 that the first symptoms can be met. Before, we talk about early presbycusis.

The first symptoms that must alert appear in sound environments: we hear badly, we make us repeat and we often speak a little louder than the others. It is also sometimes the entourage who points out this hearing loss.

This explains why social discomfort is sometimes the first symptom of presbycusis. The hearing loss is bilateral and symmetrical, and predominates over high-pitched sounds.

The social consequences are almost inevitable and are sometimes the first symptom, even before the recognition of hearing loss. We often misinterpret a conversation and thread to needle, we can become irascible, or isolate ourselves. Indeed, in the extreme, the most affected people will not make any effort to understand, will not listen and will eventually isolate themselves socially.

Hence the importance of consulting an ENT as soon as you feel a social embarrassment. Patients come for late consultation in case of presbycusis, often when they are already accustomed to a decrease in their hearing. Which is a shame, because to be paired, it is better to start early, when presbycusis is not too advanced.
