In the majority of cases, for an ingrown toenail, podiatry care coupled with antiseptic treatments or local antibiotics are sufficient.
It is advisable to consult in this case a chiropodist or even his general practitioner or a dermatologist, according to the symptoms. An antiseptic or antibiotic cream or solution may be prescribed as a treatment if the doctor considers it necessary.
A small surgical operation is considered when recurrences are frequent and problematic, or if the risk of infection is important.
The surgical operation is performed under local anesthesia, outpatient surgery (without staying in hospital). It can be performed by a dermatologist or surgeon.
The surgical procedure is to eliminate at the level of the matrix, the nail tab which poses problem. This destruction of the root takes place either by conventional surgery (surgical cutting), or with an application of phenol (phenolization).
Both are reliable, the second solution causes less bleeding (no wound and reduced healing time), but few dermatologists are trained in this technique.
In addition to these treatments, to prevent an ingrown toenail from reforming, advice will be given on:
- the shoes,
- the cut of the nail,
- sports practice, etc.
