Early menopause: premature ovarian failure (IOP)

In France, the average age of menopause is 51 years, but this is only a statistical average covering very different situations, with a period of pre-menopause, also very variable according to women.

We talk about early menopause, or more and more often premature ovarian failure (PDI), when menstruation stops before age 40. This affects about 1% of women. There is then a premature defect of secretion of ovarian hormones (sex hormones).

The early menopause is often badly experienced by women, having the impression of aging prematurely, to end their gynecological life before age ... Alongside this difficult psychological aspect, the woman sometimes has symptoms that strongly disrupt everyday, like hot flashes.

A general practitioner or of course a gynecologist can be consulted. If the decline in the secretion of female hormones is confirmed, a treatment is proposed to avoid the harmful consequences of these hormonal disorders, such as the risk of osteoporosis, or the occurrence of cardiovascular problems.

Treatment should be continued until the age of fifty. And medical supervision is recommended. During this consultation, the doctor looks for the cause of early menopause, but in most cases, the precise origin will not be discovered ...
