Triglycerides: Understanding your blood test results

Like cholesterol, triglycerides are lipid compounds (fats) in our body.

Triglycerides are essential to our good energy. It's when their rate goes up too much, that you have to be careful.

If we like poetry, we can also call them triacylglycerols or triacylglycerides, but in our home language, they are called triglycerides.

What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are composed of fatty acids and they are stored in adipose tissue (fat). They are made by our body in the small intestine, and during the degradation of fast sugars by the liver.

When triglycerides are normally present in the body (1.5 g to 2 g per liter of blood), they allow to be in shape, since they are a sort of reserve of fuel, reserve of energy for our organization.

When you eat too much fast sugar or drink too much alcohol, your blood levels rise. When they are too abundant, they are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
