Antioxidants: the benefits

Antioxidants are found mainly in fruits and vegetables, and many studies have proven their health benefits.

Thus, antioxidants would be effective, among others, for:

Lower cholesterol
Prevent cancer
Protect the eyes
Counteract the effects of pollution
Delay the aging of the skin

Lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease:

As we explained earlier, antioxidants can fight against free radicals. But they also prevent the oxidation of fats that can be harmful to the blood vessels.

In the family of antioxidants, we find carotenoids (present in yellow, orange or red food such as oranges, peppers, tomatoes, peaches, mangos, papayas ...), which according to some studies reduce the level of LDL (bad cholesterol) in the blood. Consumption of these foods rich in carotenoids thus limit the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Prevent cancers:

If fruits and vegetables are so popular and presented as benefactors for health, it's not for nothing! And one of the reasons would be that antioxidant nutrients, if consumed in sufficient quantities, would reduce the risk of cancer by more than 30% *.

Protect the eyes:

In general, all antioxidant molecules are protective of the eye and vision. Among them, carotenoids, specifically zeaxanthin and lutein.

According to a study by INSERM *, the consumption of foods rich in zeaxanthin (corn, cauliflower) would reduce by 93% the risk of AMD (age-related macular degeneration) and by 47% the occurrence of a cataract.

Lutein (egg yolk, carrots, oranges, spinach) would lower the risk of AMD.

Counter the effects of pollution:

The air we breathe is often polluted with powerful oxidants such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone, which can lead to breathing problems.

Studies have shown that some antioxidant nutrients (especially vitamin E and beta-carotene) can greatly reduce the oxidation of these harmful molecules.

Delay the aging of the skin:

Free radicals are also harmful for skin aging. Indeed, when they are too many in the body, free radicals attack cell membranes. Result: the skin deteriorates, is damaged prematurely.

But, again, antioxidants can help limit the damage, especially in green leafy vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, spinach), or in dark fruits (plums, raspberries, currants ...).
