The IUD: advantages and disadvantages of the IUD

Among the methods of contraception available today, there is one that we know little or badly: it is the IUD . It has many advantages, however.

What is the IUD?

The IUD, or IUD (which means intrauterine device), is placed in the uterus. The IUD is in the shape of a "T". At one of its extremities is attached a thread: it leaves the opening of the cervix and protrudes slightly into the vagina. It is this little wire, about three centimeters long, that makes it possible to control the presence of the correct positioning of the IUD. It is also he who allows the doctor to remove the IUD when the time comes.

Simple to ask, the doctor (the gynecologist) inserts it in a few minutes and removes it just as easily.
And when should I remove the IUD? This is the great advantage: once in place, the IUD can remain for several years (in the absence of discomfort or problem).

Another advantage: the IUD is self-sufficient. No need to take a tablet in addition, the IUD is without constraints: so there is no forgetting of risk!

The different types of IUDs

The IUDs are all made of a thin plastic frame. There are two types of IUD on the market with comparable efficacy: the copper IUD and the hormonal IUD.

The copper IUD

This is the most common. There are several models, and different sizes to fit the anatomy of each. It allows to keep its cycle, and therefore to have its monthly rules.

Lifespan: from 5 to 10 years
Price: about 30 €

The hormonal IUD

The hormonal IUD is usually only second-line when the copper IUD is unsuitable for a variety of reasons (eg heavy periods).

The hormonal IUD continuously diffuses a small amount of hormones. This type of IUD decreases the duration or importance of the rules until they are removed in some women.

Lifespan: 3 or 5 years depending on the model (and the size of the tank).
Price: 125 € approximately

With the hormonal IUD, more than one in two women will have more periods after a while. Because the hormone will prevent the uterine lining from growing.

Is it reimbursed?

Like some contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs) or IUDs are reimbursable: they are reimbursed at 65% by the Health Insurance under the usual conditions, many mutual support the supplement.
