Here are the conditions necessary to donate blood in France:
> Age: between 18 and 70 years old (between 18 and 50 years old for a donation of white blood cells).
> Weight: it is necessary to weigh a minimum of 50 kilograms, because the law prohibits to collect more than 8ml / kg. The minimum volume of a blood donation is 400ml. Usually taken between 400 and 500 ml.
> Health: The general state of health is studied, and taking certain drugs can be a barrier to blood donation.
A man can give blood 6 times a year, a woman 4 times a year, with a delay of at least 8 weeks between each donation.

For homosexual men the conditions for donating blood are changing
Starting in the spring of 2016, homosexual men will be able to donate their blood (with the implementation of specific rules for the safety of recipients). In 2015, the Ministry of Health decided to end the exclusion of blood donation based on sexual orientation. This exclusion of blood donation to homosexuals, was taken in the 80s, because of HIV contracted by a greater number of homosexual men (we now speak of MSM: Men having Sex with Men).
This possibility of giving blood for homosexual men, will be done according to conditions of security and very specific controls which should moreover evolve with the years and according to the studies. Thus, as a first step, the Ministry of Health indicates that "men who, in the last 4 months, have not had sex with a man or have had a single partner, will be able to donate their blood through the creation of a secure quarantine sector ".
The Ministry of Health says that "the quarantine-safe plasma sector will allow health authorities to benefit from a" real-life "study, and if this study shows that there are no risks, MSM donation rules will be brought closer to the general rules ".
