Vitamin D: what to know!

Vitamin D plays a vital role in strengthening bones and teeth. For a sufficient daily intake, a diet rich in vitamin D combined with exposure to the sun of the skin is required .

What is Vitamin D for?

Vitamin D contains different substances: calciferols (including vitamins D2 and D3). The body has two sources of vitamin D: a small part is provided by the diet, but most is synthesized by the skin under the action of sunlight.

The main function of this vitamin is to maintain a good absorption capacity of the intestine for calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Vitamin D also plays a vital role in the formation and proper functioning of bones and muscles. She also participates in the consolidation of teeth.

Prevention of osteoporosis and other properties

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets (bone demineralization) especially in young children. This results in bone and muscle pain, even bone deformities in the growing child. In France, preventive nutritional measures have been taken to avoid these problems.

In the elderly, lack of vitamin D can also lead to mineralization problems (osteomalacia) and promotes osteoporosis. The latter is a degradation of the structure of the bone and often causes fractures of the wrist, vertebrae, or femoral neck.

People most at risk of vitamin D deficiency are:

  • Infants,
  • Pregnant women,
  • Old people,
  • Chronic patients of the intestine,
  • People consuming a lot of alcohol,
  • People who are not exposed to the light of day (patients, invalids, inhabitants of the Nordic countries),
