Hernia: treatments

If the hernia is known, the patient will often reduce his hernia manually, as soon as the first signs appear. This reduction can be done by reintegrating the hernia sac and its contents into the abdomen. If it is difficult, it can be easier to reduce by putting a wet and warm cloth on the swelling for a few moments before returning it.

The treatment of hernia is surgical. It is necessary if the general condition of the patient allows it, before the hernia becomes definitively irreducible and causes an occlusion.

It happens that the hernia is unknown is that the discovery of the pathology is done at the onset of this complication.

The doctor will sometimes find an immobile swelling at the dehiscent orifices: this hernia is irreducible and not impulsive to coughing.

Surgical treatment should not be postponed to put everything back in order and consolidate the responsible openings. The treatment should be started as soon as possible before occlusion and necrosis of the organs contained in the hernia sac develop and aggravate the situation.

The surgical treatment is often a simple gesture: it consists of a resection of the hernia sac, closure of the peritoneum and the orifice. Sometimes the setting up of a plate is necessary when the orifice is too big or the tissues not enough tonic which is frequent in the old people.
