Eczema: the symptoms

The characteristic symptom of eczema is an itchy rash.

Atopic eczema appears readily on the face : on the cheekbones, cheeks, but without touching the middle of the face.

Eczema is also found behind the ears, in the folds of the elbows, behind the knees ... The typical lesion of eczema is in the form of red patches with dry or oozing vesicles.

Lesions are very itchy (itchy), and children tend to scratch a lot. Sometimes the outbreaks are very important with very oozing lesions, which evolve towards crusts.

In children, eczema causes agitation and insomnia when rashes are very itchy. If the lesions do not become infected, they leave no scar.

The risk of bacterial infection exists if the child is scratching, especially the impetigestion of eczema (superinfection usually caused by staphylococcus aureus), with the risk of indelible scarring.

After the age of 3 or 4 years, many children are better ... The symptoms are reduced but sometimes leave skin dry.

If the child no longer suffers from eczema, he keeps an atopic site, and later, he is more likely to suffer from hay fever, asthma or to continue to suffer from eczema ...

Later, the child may have "residual" symptoms of atopic eczema for a long time until adolescence, or even adulthood: lesions behind the ears (the bases of the lobes are cut off and are the seat of a small patch of eczema), cheilitis (inflammation of the lips) around the mouth, white spots on the face after exposure to the sun, scabs, dry skin, etc.
