Gonorrhea: The causes

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae otherwise known as gonococcus. This is why gonorrhea is also known as gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea is a highly transmissible disease. That is to say that a contaminated person (even asymptomatic) very easily transmits the germ. It is present in the genital secretions.

This is why the gonococcus contracts during unprotected sex (without a condom). Whether genital, orogenital or anogenital.

The causes of gonorrhea are therefore reduced to the lack of sufficient vigilance during sexual intercourse, moreover at the time of changes of partners.

In France, gonorrhea, particularly in its anorectal form, has been on the increase since 1998. Men are more often affected than women, with a sex ratio of 10 men to 1 woman. This clear predominance of men is due to more frequent risk taking among homosexual and bisexual men.

The other risk factors for gonorrhea are the same as those for Sexually Transmitted Infections: early sexual intercourse (before 17 years), first two decades of sexual life, multiple sexual partners, history of STIs, HIV infection (AIDS virus), etc.
Because the risk factors are the same, other STIs - including HIV infection - are frequently associated with gonorrhea.
