Against indications

This medicine should not be given if:
- Hyper-sensitivity to one of the compounds,
- risk of glaucoma by closing the angle,
- risk of urinary retention related to urethroprostatic disorders,
- in case of breastfeeding: the passage of atropine into breast milk may lead to overdose in the infant, including signs of neurological toxicity. In addition, atropine decreases the milk secretion. Therefore, if taking this medication is really necessary, breastfeeding is contraindicated.
This drug is generally not recommended during the last trimester of pregnancy: studies in animals have shown a teratogenic effect of atropine in a single species and at very high doses. In clinical practice, the use of atropine in a limited number of pregnancies has apparently not revealed any particular malformative or foetotoxic effect to date. However, further studies are needed to assess the consequences of exposure during pregnancy. Therefore, as a precaution, it is best not to use atropine during pregnancy.
