Sleep apnea is a sleep and breathing disorder. During snoring, the pharyngeal muscles are relaxed and the soft tissues of the pharynx tend to obstruct the upper airways.

Snoring becomes more intense as the passage narrows, and apnea occurs when the walls of the pharynx have completely collapsed and block the passage of air.
